POSCO in the list of 100 companies that will survive the next 100 years
The world’s fourth larges steel maker, POSCO, has been included in a global list of 100 companies that will last the next 100 years. The list, released recently, includes companies from 15 countries from all sectors of economy. The list which has been released annually since 2005 is compiled by the Canada-based ‘Corporate Knights’ magazine and ‘Innovest Strategic Value Advisors’. Both Corporate Knights and Innovest track the performance of global companies on the basis of sustainability and innovation.
The 2010 list was released by Corporate Knights on 28 January and Davos in Switzerland at the World Economic Forum meet. The list selects the 100 companies likely to last the next 100 years on the basis of the strength of their relationship with stakeholders, value of their innovations and probity of their financial actions. This list is particularly significant on account of major changes sweeping through the corporate world which has seen the disappearance of many companies over the past 10 years.
Governance, transparency and capacity to handle environment-related issues are taken into account in selecting these 100 companies. POSCO has been included in this list of the 100 companies that are most likely to survive till 2109. These are all companies that demonstrate a commitment to the Earth, and the communities they serve.
Commenting on POSCO’s inclusion in this list, Mr. CK Kwon, Managing Director of POSCO-India, said that POSCO must count as amongst the world’s biggest corporate success stories. Set up in 1968, POSCO is a relatively young company, yet it now operates the world’s two biggest steel plants at Gwangyang and Pohang in South Korea, along with many steel processing facilities globally. It is now in the process of setting up the world’s third largest steel plant at Jagatsinghpur in Odisha which will produce 12 million tones of steel per annum.
“The strength of POSCO lies in dealing with basic issues with care. We believe in discipline and commitment. POSCO is the only large steel maker in the world which posted profits all through 2009, when recession was biting deep”, says Mr. Kwon. “Wherever we have worked we have done so in partnership with our shareholders, employees and local community. They have taken us from strength to strength. We have also worked to grow the community with educational institutions and scholarships and to grow the natural environment around us with environment-friendly technology. The FINEX technology that we will install at our Jagatsinghpur plant is designed to be environment-friendly”, Mr. Kwon added
“POSCO will not only last the next 100 years, but will go beyond, and India will play a big part in our story of survival and growth”, Mr. Kwon said.
